Mr. Kennedy Models

Wednesday, March 27, 1957

James S. Kennedy, one of our busiest Speech instructors, doubles as a model in his spare time. He appears in the April issue of Ebony Magazine in an article entitled “The Lustrous Look.” Mr. Kennedy cuts a fine figure indeed, modeling outfits ranging from the silk shantung suit shown above casual-looking sports attire.

THE WHOLE SITUATION came about through Mr. Kennedy’s lecturing at a charm school. Certain individuals became interested in his modeling possibilities. As he explained, “It is impossible to have charm without having good speech and vocal characteristics. Personality is best exemplified by speech.”

WHEN ASKED WHETHER he would continue his modeling, Mr. Kennedy replied he would continue this interesting sideline as long as it did not interfere with his teaching. He added, “I have received phone calls and mail from as far as Denver, Colorado, since this magazine hit the stands. However, most of these are sent mainly through the curiosity of friends who wonder whether I am still teaching. I explaining to them that teaching is a vocation, anything else an avocation.”

WHILE LEAFING THROUGH this issue of Ebony, Mr. Kennedy pointed out a man in a review of MGM’s “Something Of Value.” “That man,” he reminisced, “made movie shorts with me some time ago. He stayed in pictures, while I went on to teaching.” That man was William Marshall, one of the top ranking Negro actors in films today.
